Founded in 1875 by Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Piguet in the Valley of Joux, in Switzerland. Renowned for its exceptional know-how and innovation, the Audemars Piguet brand is best known for its luxury watches, in particular the emblematic Royal Oak model, launched in 1972, which revolutionized the design of sports watches in steel. Audemars Piguet combines craft tradition and advanced technologies, and major in the world of luxury watchmaking. She continues to be a major player in the world of luxury watchmaking.
To stand out and assert its innovative image, Audemars Piguet requests in 1972 the young designer watchmaker Gérald Genta in order to design a watch responding to the aspirations of youth in search of novelty and change. Gérald Genta opts for two major innovations: first, an elegant octagonal form, being between the round dial and the geometric shapes then in vogue on the market. Then, it offers an entirely stainless steel watch, while the market is dominated by precious metals and luxury stones, while maintaining a high price, comparable to that of competitors. The "Royal Oak" then becomes the first luxury sports watch with a steel case and thus revolutionizes the history of watchmaker design.
The Royal Oak City of Sails Alinghi model was created for the 30th anniversary of the Royal Oak and dedicated to the Geneva sail team Alinghi, winner of the 2003 America Cup in Auckland (New Zealand), in an edition of 1250 including 50 copies in platinum. The background of the case has a unique medallion in high relief representing two moving racing sailboats. A watch that can be admired from all possible angles, because all its details are a real spectacle.
